Pet Boarding at Home Environment

When the time comes for the annual holiday travel season more and more pet owners are looking for alternatives to the traditional kennel boarding services. Many dog and cat owners are willing to go the extra mile if it means their furry friends are kept in a comfortable and caring environment. Pet hotels and even doggy holiday resorts are becoming more and more popular and many offer a level of luxury to pets that exceeds what the owners themselves enjoy while away.

PetsVentura Pet Hotel available for those pets whose owners are willing to pay the right price. However more and more owners are taking a different route, choosing to not board their dogs and cats in boarding centers - irrespective of how posh the facilities which are available - instead many owners select the relatively new, yet fairly simple concept of home boarding.

Home boarding is as straightforward as it sounds. Dogs and cats, instead of being placed in cages at a boarding facility are temporarily relocated to a pet sitter's home. The dogs are placed in a loving, family environment which is best suited to maintaining the pet's regular routine. Dogs are walked, played with and fed according to the specifications of the owner.

Satisfied owners insist the personalized and loving attention dogs receive through home boarding helps the animals maintain a calm and relaxed attitude while their owners are away. The feeling is that pets home boarded end up happier and healthier, both while the owner is away and after he or she comes back.

Dogs kept in boarding facilities are often walked infrequently, spending many hours a day alone in a small room or plastic cage. Home-boarded dogs live in the company of their sitter and are hardly ever left alone. Home boarding proponents and sitters like to stress that although the animal's stay with them is temporary the pets are treated as though they are part of the pet sitter's household, and cared for with the same amount of love and kindness as the sitter's own pets.

Although the original method of finding someone to home board your pet was a laborious search through classified listings or by word of mouth a greater and greater number of pet sitting services will arrange a home board for a small fee.

The convenience of such services is great, especially when you consider the number of precautionary steps the pet sitting service might offer. For example, a pet owner might not have the time to interview perspective sitters and or inspect the homes their pets will be staying in.

Pet sitting services maintain an up to date list of prospective sitters and will pre-screen both the sitter and their home on the owner's behalf. Pet sitters are chosen for their love of animals and trustworthy level of responsibility.

Homes are judged based on their comfort, cleanliness and appropriate facilities based on the pets to be boarded .

Published dog care expert and long time proponent of home dog boarding Newcastle resident Arlen Tooscombe, summed up the home boarding philosophy in his book Stay, Good Boy thusly, We would never put our children in a cage or hotel room for a week only to convenience ourselves, why do so many feel it is right to do it to our furred and feathered friends.

These are our companions. We appreciate their companionship and they appreciate ours. Why not allow them some caring companionship when we can't be with them? It is not so much a treat, as a responsibility.

Driving With Dogs Can Be Dangerous

About two-thirds of dog owners surveyed by the AAA organization said they routinely drive while petting or playing with their dogs, sometimes even giving them food or water while maneuvering through traffic.
It has been a common sight for many years to see dogs hanging their heads out of open car windows with their ears flapping in the breeze. But in the cocoon that the automobile has become, more drivers are nonchalantly cradling their dogs atop their laps or perching the animals on their chests with the pet's front paws clutching the driver's neck or shoulders.

It's risky behavior for the driver and dangerous for the pets, too.
An 80-pound dog unrestrained during a crash at 30 mph exerts 2,400 pounds of force in a vehicle, creating a danger for the dog and anyone in its path, according to Motivation Design LLC.
Most drivers don't realize that a dog moving around a vehicle or sitting on someone's lap can injure or kill occupants during a crash, particularly if air bags deploy.
If the animal is sitting between the steering wheel and the driver, the air bag will throw the animal back at you with great force.

How safe is it to ship my pet by air?

A letter written by Senators Robert Menendez (D-N.J.), Richard Durbin (D-Ill.) and Joseph Lieberman (I-Conn.) calling on Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood to review current regulations concerning the reporting of animal deaths on commercial airlines:

"While concerns about the reporting of pet fatalities voiced by Senators Menendez, Durbin and Lieberman are valid, changing the way airlines report the deaths of pets will not save lives in the long run."

"Our national focus should be on proactive ways to make pet travel safer and acknowledging that professional pet travel companies help pet owners avoid tragic mistakes, like using crates that are not adequately ventilated or booking pets on airlines that are not able to safely accommodate animals."

A special compartment in the cargo section, designed for Live Animals It is fully pressurized and same temperature as the passenger cabin.  This area is VERY carefully monitored by the Captain and staff.

Yes, it does have some noise..

Pet owners can minimize these risks.

Major problems resulting in death or serious health issues result from: brachycephalic breeds of cats and dogs; and having the brachycephalic respiratory syndrome.  Also, elderly pets.  And, those having congenital or pre-existing health issues.  These pets often have pre-existing heart disease resulting in pulmonary congestion and edema.  Then, if a death occurs, one is often inclined to blame the airline.

Kennel construction is most often the problem with escapes, etc.  Many kennels have very poor connection devices.

Many pet injuries occur when some pets scratch and try to escape.  Pet shippers and airlines can NOT be  responsible for highly agitated pets.  If you have a pet that meets any of the above criteria as being a risk factor, just do NOT ship these pets.

Most reputable pet transportation companies are members of a group called the Independent Pet and Animal Transportation Association (IPATA). The association regulates and monitors the pet transportation industry by setting ethics standards and overseeing the performance of their members. As part of their membership, pet shipping companies are given access to a network of pet transportation professionals globally who have guaranteed reputations for the services they provide.

How many pet owners are willing to use the services given by  reputable IPATA members?

Due to IPATA's exacting standards for membership, affiliates are able to safely coordinate this specialized service for the most precious of cargo. As a way of bridging the gap often found in an international industry, IPATA also offers an annual conference where the members gather to meet and exchange ideas, attend classes on country import requirements and species-specific handling techniques, and attend forums where reps from major airlines come to answer questions in a round-table format. International requirements vary from country to country, so working with a quality pet transport or shipping company who is also up to date on the current import requirements is crucial.

The risk of extreme temperatures affecting the pet's safety is one of the other significant concerns among pet owners, many airlines will even embargo pets during the winter and summer months. But most reputable pet transportation companies work with airlines that have programs in place to keep pets in climate-controlled areas the entire duration of the flight. The pet is never exposed to extreme weather and this allows companies to transport pets all over the world year-round.

Some airlines are not adequately set up to take care of animals in the event that there is a delay or emergency. "Pet friendly" airlines have developed dedicated pet programs to care for their four-legged travelers that keep them in climate control not only while in the plane, but also while waiting to board. These airlines also have kennel facilities at their main hubs, where during layovers, all of the pets pet are checked on, watered and if necessary, served meals.

Introduced compulsory microchipping

Jurisdictions that have introduced compulsory microchipping (such as New South Wales and Victoria in Australia) have found that there’s been a dramatic drop in the number of untraceable stray dogs, with microchipconsequent huge financial savings for local authorities and animal charities.

In the New World of compulsory microchipping, this would happen every time a dog was found out on its own, and the local constabulary would give the careless owner something a little more formal and unpleasant than a sharp word from the local vet.

It's said again and again, but it’s so true: this problem is the fault of the humans, not the dogs. How do you make the humans responsible? Forge an unbreakable link between owner and dog with a microchip. If this government is serious about wanting to solve this problem, they should listen to those who work with dogs on a daily basis. Legislation to enforce compulsory microchipping and registration of all dogs should be introduced without delay.

Animal oxygen masks

Fire Department will have the means to revive pets that are suffering from smoke inhalation or carbon monoxide poisoning.Animal-Oxygen-Mask

Losing a pet in a fire can add to the trauma of a family already having to deal with the fallout of the damage caused by a fire. While rescue personnel have oxygen masks meant for humans, these masks do not work well on animals because they do not fit well on their faces.

The cone-shaped masks, which are available in three sizes, can be fitted snugly on the animal's snouts, and have been found to be very effective in resuscitating pets suffering from inhaling smoke. Because of the various sizes they come in they can be used on different types and sizes of pet animals such as cats, dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets, and even birds. These special oxygen masks are equipped with a rubber ring, which creates an effective seal, thus allowing pure oxygen to be pumped into the noses of the animal. The masks are simple to use as they only need to be placed over the snout of the animal, then hooked to an oxygen tank which forces oxygen into the animal. As long as the animal is breathing, these masks can be very effective.

Pet travel and health tips

When traveling by car, pack a simple pet first-aid kit that includes assorted bandages, antiseptic cream, an antidiarrheal medication that is safe for pets (ask your veterinarian to suggest a product), gauze squares, and the phone numbers of your veterinarian, a national poison control hotline, and a 24-hour emergency veterinary hospital.

In addition to a standard identification tag (which should be labeled with your name, home address, and phone number), your pet's collar should include a travel tag with information on where you are staying while away from home. Should your pet become lost, this will allow you to be contacted locally.

Perform a daily "health check" on your pet when away from home. In unfamiliar surroundings, your pet's appetite, energy, and disposition may change. Watch for unusual discharges from the nose and eyes, excessive scratching or biting of any body part, abnormal elimination, or excessive water consumption. Visit a local veterinarian if you are concerned about any physical or behavioral changes.

San Francisco considers a Ban On Pets

In a ridiculous new attempt of the government to act as big brother and control the lives of its citizens, San Francisco is considering a ban on the sale of all pets excluding fish. This proposed ban would include everything from the sale of cats and dogs to hamsters, mice, guinea pigs, birds, reptiles, and snakes.

The proposed ban - believed to be the first of its kind - would require San Francisco residents who want a pet to either go to another city, adopt one from a shelter, or find it in the classifieds.

This ban would prevent persons who do not have the ability to travel from gaining ownership of a pet.

Your input for this ban is welcome by PetsVentura.

HONEY USE WITH ANIMALS

Treatment options other than antibiotics use on pets such as honey. Honey may be a safe, effective and affordable treatment option in many cases.

MACAW PARROT

macawsThe macaw parrot is a type of parrot that originates from
South America and Africa.

There are many different types of macaws and two of the most popular are the Catalina macaw parrot and the blue and yellow macaw parrot.

Many people will recognize the macaw from pirate movies as being the parrot that sits on the shoulder of the captain. They were of course used by sailors back in those days for sailors who could not speak. They used to train the macaw parrot to speak for them.

The lifespan of the macaw parrot ranges from 15 to 30 years depending on how well looked after they are. There is lots you can do to make sure your macaw parrot will live for longer and one of the most important things you can do as an owner is to make sure your macaw is consistently being shown attention. Parrots hate nothing more than to be bored and being bored usually decreases their lifespan.

As the macaw parrot is a wild animal that came from the forests of Africa and South America, they must be specially treated. Therefore only trained experts should own a macaw because it takes a lot of effort to maintain these beautiful creatures. One of the things owners use to keep their macaws from boredom is to teach them how to talk. Many people don't realize that the macaw is an amazing talker. Expert trainers are able to teach their macaw parrot to speak several different phrases and words.

Another thing that trainers like to do to keep their macaw parrots happy is to teach them tricks. These tricks include anything from card tricks to ball games. They are amazing thinkers and have the capacity to solve even the most challenging of problems. Next time you visit the local wildlife reserve and they have a macaw parrot as apart of their wildlife, ask the trainers to show you some of the tricks they have taught their parrots. This will give you a good opportunity to learn many things for when you perhaps decide to get your own macaw parrot one day.

DOG LITTER ON BUENOS AIRES STREETS

PETITION
We state our frustration with the high level of dog excrement on the streets of Buenos Aires. We want to see dog owners held responsible for their pet’s litter. Accountability means, we want financial fines to be actively issued by the City of Buenos Aires to dog owners who fail to pick up their dog’s litter. The time has come for Buenos Aires police to be more active in enforcing the rules!

BA POO
Clearly dog litter is an ongoing problem in Buenos Aires area which is of concern to many city residents. It is typical in this type of problem that the residents themselves are often the ones who cause the problem. The keys to solving this problem are increased awareness and a change in behavior.

The solution is related to changing resident’s behavior. Clearly by taking a walk on the streets of Buenos Aires today, it is obvious that the city’s current policy is not working. Dog litter is everywhere on the streets and sidewalks of the city. Dog owners are commonly seen letting their dog’s shit in public parks, where signs clearly stating dogs are not allowed. The only way to change bad behavior is to punish it! Just as parking violations, urinating in public are fined in the city, dog shitting must also be actively punished. The fines should be in turn used to finance the costs of keeping the city clean.

Not only is dog litter offensive to have to look at, but it is also dangerous to our children. Toxocara can stay in the ground for up to three years after the animal has contaminated. Dog litter on the streets and parks of Buenos Aires is an embarrassment to visitors.
We, the residents of Buenos Aires want to keep our city clean and dog-litter free!
Sincerely,

Be Involved

Peru offers national hairless dog to President-elect Barack

LIMA, Peru — Completely bald and older than the Incas, the Peruvian hairless dog seems like an odd fit for the White House.

image_7827751

The Friends of the Peruvian Hairless Dog Association responded on Monday, sending a letter to the U.S. Embassy in Peru offering the Obama family a 4-month-old pup that responds to “Machu Picchu,” the name of Peru’s famed Inca citadel.

They were kept as pets during the Inca empire and depictions of the breed appear in 1,200-year-old, pre-Inca artwork.

The hairless dog was long scorned for its appearance before it was recognized internationally as the official Peruvian dog.
