Choosing Best Pet Foods - Ingredients

Pet Health Through Nutrition

Alfalfa

Alfalfa is one of the most nutritionally complete foods, providing nutrients needed by dogs to sustain wellbeing. The green leaves of the alfalfa plant are an excellent source of digestible soluble fiber and chlorophyll. Alfalfa has also been shown to be a source of protein and rich source of minerals such as calcium, magnesium, potassium, manganese, phosphorus, iron, and zinc. It also contains the entire spectrum of known vitamins including Vitamin A !cathammock (Beta Carotene), Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, Niacin, Biotin, Choline, Pantothenic acid, Folic Acid, Vitamin C, Vitamin E (Tocopherols), and Vitamin K.

Antioxidants

Antioxidants are a necessity to every diet, including your dogs and cats. Antioxidants are powerful compounds that neutralize free radicals – natural substances produced by the body as it ages – to help your dog maintain a healthy, active life. Dogs naturally produce their own antioxidant Vitamin C, but other antioxidant nutrients such as Vitamin E, Beta Carotene, and the trace mineral Selenium must be consumed in their daily diets. The best food sources of antioxidant nutrients are fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains – all foods most dogs like but don’t regularly get to eat.

Beet Pulp

Beet Pulp is the vegetable matter that remains after sugar is extracted from sliced grey sugar beets. It is an excellent source of soluble fiber and helps to maintain a healthy digestive tract and promote normal stools.

Brewer’s Yeast

Brewer’s dried yeast is loaded with highly digestible protein with an exceptional amino acid balance and contains an abundance of natural minerals and vitamins, especially B Complex Vitamins (except B12). Brewer’s dried yeast helps the digestive system work at peak efficiency, allowing your pet to get even more nutrition from our wholesome foods.

Brown Rice

Brown rice is natural whole grain rice that provides fiber as well as valuable quantities of minerals and essential B vitamins. It is highly digestible and an excellent high quality complex carbohydrate source for energy and fiber for colon health.

Eggs

Eggs are one of nature’s most nutrient dense foods and play an important part of a balanced diet. They are considered a complete protein source providing essential amino acids, vitamins and minerals (Vitamins A, B, E, K, Biotin, and Sulfur) that can make a significant contribution to healthy growth and muscle development. Eggs also provide healthy fats such as Omega-6 for healthy skin and coat.

Flax Seed Meal

Flax seed meal is the richest plant source of antioxidant lignans and Omega-3 fatty acids that both help support an active immune system. The high levels of Omega-3 fatty acids in flax seed meal also help promote healthy skin and a shiny coat. Flax seed meal also has a very high level of highly digestible protein and essential amino acids needed to keep dogs fit and healthy. In addition, flax seed meal contains high amounts of fiber (aids in digestion), Vitamin E, Folic Acid, Riboflavin, Niacin, Vitamin B6 and is extremely high in the minerals Potassium, Calcium and Phosphorus.

Potatoes

Potatoes are a real energy provider for your dog as they provide an excellent source of highly digestible complex carbohydrates. They contain an abundance of potassium and magnesium, minerals required for healthy muscles and a strong heart. Potatoes are also a good source of Vitamin C.

Proteinated Minerals

Proteinated minerals are organic minerals complexed with natural protein amino acids. By acting like a protein they offer better absorption, resulting in more efficient use of the regular trace minerals.

HOMEMADE DOG FOOD

The recent dog food and pet food recall that has claimed the lives of dogs across the world as a result of eating contaminated commercial dog food tainted with aminopterin, a rat poison, and melamine, a chemical used in making plastics and fertilizer. As a result many dog owners considering homemade dog food as a safe and nutritious alternative for their dog.

petslove

In a recent news article, a law professor states that little change is anticipated ( in the dog food industry) after the current onslaught of dog food recall news and attention subsides.

The probable reason for this conclusion is that there are insufficient financial resources and manpower to effectively monitor and regulate the dog food industry. You can’t trust the dog food industry to watch out for your dog and the government is not your answer either.

This is unfortunate. The dog food industry was born in postwar America to meet a need….the need of business interests to recycle slaughterhouse and industrial waste. This refuse had potential uses as fertilizer, landfill and such, but a more profitable horizon existed in the packaging and selling this “junk” as food to unsuspecting dog owners. It is now a common misconception that your dog can not maintain a healthy life unless he is fed commercial dog food. Nothing could be further from the truth.

To save your dogs life, you may want to consider making your own homemade dog food. This is one of the best ways to guarantee your dog a healthy and safe diet.

Example for homemade cooking:

Fish Meal

1 can of salmon (bones removed)

1 egg beaten

3 Tbsp cornmeal

1 potato

1 carrot

1 stick celery

1 Tbsp peanut butter

Combine salmon, egg, and cornmeal and mix well, form into patties, and coat them with a little more cornmeal. Fry in a tiny amount of canola oil until brown on both sides. Chop patties into small bites and stir together with chopped and boiled vegetables. A spoonful of cottage cheese may be stirred in for moisture if desired. Finish off dinner with peanut butter as dessert.

PET 'S SHAMPOO, FRARANCES AND SKIN CONDITIONERS - HOME MADE

Aromatic Dry Shampoo

250 ml (1 cup) cornmeal
250 ml (1 cup) baby/talcum powder
5 ml (1 tsp) rosemary
5 ml (1 tsp) lavender

Combine all of the ingredients in a large, airtight container and let them sit overnight. This will allow the rosemary and lavender to scent the other two ingredients lightly. When ready, sprinkle generously over your dog and brush it into her fur by working your fingers against the lay of her coat. Once it's worked in thoroughly, use your fingers or a hard rubber brush to massage her coat in the direction of the fur but working in circles. Brush until the mixture is completely out of the coat. Your baby will smell great, the powder and cornmeal help absorb excess oil and dirt to clean her, and she won't have had to go through the trauma of having a full bath! How great is that?

Herbal Shampoo

470 ml (2 cups) purified water
10 ml (1 tbsp) rosemary
10 ml (1 tbsp) orange zest
30 ml (2 tbsp) chamomile
10 ml (1 tbsp) lavender oil
120 ml (1/2 cup) baby shampoo

Bring water to a boil, and then remove from heat. Add all of the herbs, cover the dish, and allow it to steep overnight. Strain the mixture and stir in the oils, then gently add the shampoo until well mixed. This shampoo should be kept refrigerated for freshness when not in use, but use about 2 tablespoons every time you wash your dog for a sweet-smelling, great treat for both of you. Don't forget to give her a little massage while you're rubbing it in!

Lemon Flea Dip

3 lemons
940 ml (1 quart) water
60 ml (1/4 cup) baking soda
5 ml (1 tsp) herbal shampoo

Cut the lemons into eighths while bringing the water to a rolling boil. Add the lemons, boil for one hour, then cover and let the mixture steep overnight. Strain the solution then add the remaining ingredients and mix thoroughly. Warm to a tepid temperature before applying. To spoil your pup with the application, dip a sponge into the water and drizzle it slowly over her coat, then use your fingers to work it in using slow, deliberate circles focusing on points like the hips and shoulders. Give her a good massage - she deserves it! This shampoo uses citrus oil to help repel fleas, but the warm water and baking soda also help to soothe any existing irritations she may have.

HELP RELIEVE DOG'S ITCHY SKIN

  • No vaccinations if the pet is itchy. I prefer titers every year, and only immunize if the titers indicate the need and if the itchiness is well controlled.
  • Omega-3 fatty acids. I recommend fish oil at two to four times the label dose.
  • Natural diet, ideally homemade, using the diets in my book, Natural Care for Dogs and Cats
  • Bath frequently, every one to two days as needed until your pet is comfortable.

You can try antihistamines (work with your doctor) but if response is not seen within one week that antihistamine or that dose of antihistamine will not work. Try something else.

If antigen injections (allergy shots) do not help after 12 months, they won't work.

PET FLEA POWDER

Ingredients:

2 Tbsp Dried ground pennyroyal

2 Tbsp Dried ground fennel

2 Tbsp Cornstarch

Directions:

Mix well; dust your pet with the powder. To get the maximum benefit, rub powder right into the skin.

CLEAN DOG URINE

First, soak up as much of the urine as possible while blotting (not rubbing) the carpet with paper towels. You should start from the area outside of the stain ring and move inward.

Second, rinse the stain with club soda to dilute the urine (or water, but club soda works best) and then repeat the blotting process with clean towels.

Third, when you have determined that most of the dampness is gone, cover the area with baking soda and let it set for at least 2 hours and then vacuum the area to remove all powder.

KOSHER FOOD FOR PETS IN SOUTH AMERICA

Jews around the world are confused by what to feed the family pet during Passover. Kosher food is not a style of cooking, but rather food that has met the definition, preparation and consumption rules presented in the Kashrut.

What to do?

A matter-of-fact level, supplying the pet with kosher food for the Jewish holiday of Passover, when the rules are heightened to entirely exclude leavened bread, or anything made from the five major grains (wheat, rye, barley, oats and spelt), means that the cat or dog can be fed at home, with the family, without conflicting with the week-long prohibition. Also it should not include "by-products" of these.

Kosher foods and ingredients can be found at independent stores located near Jewish communities and in some high-end stores mainly in Buenos Aires Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Porto Alegre, Lima, Montevideo and Caracas.

To our best knowledge there is no kosher food made in particular for pets in South America.

Happy Passover!

NATURAL AND HOLISTIC FOOD FOR PETS

If you are concerned about what you’re feeding your dog since the recent dog food recalls, you may want to consider making homemade dog food and treats. Benefits of choosing natural and holistic pet care are:

Treats cause of disease not just symptoms- Holistic care also looks at an animal's environment for ways to improve health. Lowering potential causes of stress, such as loneliness or territorial conflicts, can be helpful in improving overall health. plenty exercise and grooming are also elements of good holistic care.

Longer lifespan- natural pet care will help pets live a long life and give you many years of faithful companionship.

Human safety- another reason for using natural pet products is the reduction in human exposure to toxins. Most pets are in frequent contact with people, especially children. Contact with a pet can mean risk of exposure to whatever is on your pet, whereas natural treatments avoid these risks.

Protects the environment- also, natural products breakdown and are absorbed into the environment better than chemical agents and, consequently, are more earth friendly.

Saves time- you won't be wasting your time dragging your pets to the vet's office to treat different illnesses as the holistic approach targets the individual as a whole entity, treating existing conditions from their source, not just their symptoms, and preventing new ones from developing.

Saves money- you won't be wasting your money on cheaper products that ultimately can be a contributor to declining health in your pets and thereby creating more vet visit and bills.

PETSVENTURA's CHOICE OF NATURAL DOG FOOD

For humans, a diet of natural, nutritious foods is essential to living a long, healthy life. This fundamental principle is true for pets, too. Choosing the right food for a dog is essential to giving it the opportunity to grow old and healthy.

Most likely the best thing in the world is for the pet-owner to provide the dog with home-cooked meals. Home cooking takes more time, but the owner has the advantage of knowing exactly what the dog is eating, such as steamed or raw veggies; fresh fruit; meat proteins, if preferred; cottage cheese; rice; and other foods in a natural form without chemicals or preservatives. Most people would rather have a home-cooked meal instead of a frozen dinner, and probability are their pets would, too.

Many pet owners would be astonished, and in some cases horrified, at what some manufacturers include in dog food. Years ago, dogs lived longer than they do today. It is believed by some that one of the main reasons dogs do not live as long today is because of the numerous byproducts found in the commercial pet food many dogs are fed. When humans eat healthier, they feel better; have nicer skin, stronger teeth and gums, healthier hair, and fewer visits to the doctor.

Man’s best friend deserves the same!
